The final college magazine front cover

A draft contents page

What have you learnt from completing this task?
In the beginning I didn't know how to use photoshop so throughout this process I learnt and taught myself some key skills of photoshop.

How have you used technology?

What conventions have you used and why?
I've used the common convention of using primary colours for the mast head and coverlines to make them bold and easy to read.

What would you change if you were to do this task again?
If i was to do this task again i would take a medium close up shot as the photo I took wasn't therefore did not meet the criteria.

Photographs for front cover

Most likely to chose this as I really like the angle and the way the model is looking.

Possibility but I don't quite like the lighting.
Don't like the angle from which photo is taken at.

Model is squinting and not looking directly at the camera

Mise-en-scene and Location ideas

The ideas for my location include:
One student studying at a table with folders out reading them
Walking towards the camera smiling with books/folders/college work in there hands on a sunny day

On the scene i will not be using a lot of props, only a folder and possibly a couple of books.

Feature Story Ideas

General themed:

  • Revision doesn't have to be boring
  • Rob aramayo bags a spot at hbo
  • Rising a stars
  • Science success
  • Our very own student wins anti bullying award
  • iPad competition

Colour Scheme

I like the idea of neutral colours like the black, greys and whites then use the yellow for the mast head with a white background and black coverlines. However to make it more colourful and bold I will most probably chose the red, blue and yellow colour scheme.

Magazine name

If I were to choose to go with a general college magazines some potential names could be:
Wyke Daily/Weekly
College Daily
Wyke Star
Student
College knowledge
Wyke weekly
Wyke star
Student Weekly/daily

Mood Board

This moodboard would be if I chose to do a general college one with no specific subject.

Whereas this one would be if I chose to do a sports magazine

This one and the one below would be if I chose to do a creative/art based theme.

I'd chose some photo like this if I was to do a music magazine

Liiar analysis/Semiotics

LIIAR analysis

Language:

This looks at the specific language used in the text to fit the piece and topic to what the text is about. it include fitting particular terminology to particular texts and it being relevant to the text.

Institution:

The institution is who controls the production process, this can affect the final product because depending on which institution it is it could have a different target audience meaning the final product will differ corresponding to its audience.
e.g. BBC

Ideology:

This is about which values the text shows as it is what the institution want their audience to think and see.

Audience:

These are the people who see the final product, the ones the text is made for and this differentiates to what the text is. Depending on the ideology and who the institution is it will be a different audience to each media text.

Representation:

This links to how everything in the text is shown as, it could be stereotypes or not. It all fits in with the other 4 parts of LIIAR to decide what represents what.

Image analysis

The unicorn trebor advert.

Where is the camera?
To the viewer, the horse seems bigger because of the way the camera angle is and therefore since the mint is in view line the viewer looks at it, which is what the ad is advertising. Also making the unicorn seemingly bigger it gives the suggestion that it is superior in size. This links to 'discerning' from the slogan because although unicorns aren't real they are seen as extremely rare and magical in fairy tales and therefore the most elite of horses.

What choices has the photographer made?
The white background emphasizes the theme of purity and luxury even though it may not be an instant choice as the mint and unicorn is also white. The black evening glove with jewels on contrasts with the white background however links in with the luxury and 'discerning' meaning they show a high class wealthy item to have. The idea of the viewer not seeing who the arm belongs to divert the attention to the mint and not to whom the arms belongs to.

What objects have been captured in the image?
The evening gloves and diamond jewellery emphasizes the quality of the mint and how prestigious the mint is that something as rare as a unicorn being fed the mint by a hand of luxury. This also goes against stereotypes of a stable girl as they usually wear khaki colours.
The photos of the packet at the bottom of the advert is bold and draws the eyes attention to it because its the only part of the advert that uses colours that aren't neutral as it uses a strong green, which also suggests that the mints are strong (which they are meant to be)
