Tutorial 3

I wanted my 'star' to have stubble to I used an effect on photoshop. I didn't know how to do this before so I used a tutorial from youtube. 


I chose not to do this as it didn't go with my model.

Tutorial 2

Originally I wanted to use a fish eye effect on the image and as I didn't know how to do it, I decided to google it and find a couple of online tutorials and this is what I found and used to learn:

Although it seemed like a good idea at first I didn't like the end result

Typography

I am going to choose sans serif style fonts as I am doing a indie style magazine therefore it fits in with the conventions of it and theme.

These were my first set of photos. As you can see there aren't many and therefore not a good variety to choose from. Also the quality is not very good hence why I took more photos.

I decided to use a gradient for the background. I wasn't too sure how to do this either so I also googled that and found a useful tutorial on Youtube:

Initial ideas

Indie / alternative magazine.

5 person band on the front.

Inspiration from the Q edition with beady eye on the front cover.

I want the members of the 'band' to be wearing bomber, harrington, flannel shirts or leather jackets with polo shirts, plain white / black / grey tees or button ups, black / dark blue jeans and converse / vans. Ideally I want the main person to be wearing a bucket hat and round sunglasses.

Front Cover House Styles

I like this front cover for inspiration to use. I like the design/layout of it so I am most probably going to use this as inspiration.

Double Page Spread House Styles

Double page spread:

•  A3 landscape - 300 DPI
• Page numbers 
• Dropped cap - big letter at beginning of paragraph
• Pull out quote 
• columns - publisher to place in text columns
• Column = no less than six words. no more than twelve

Contents Page House Styles

Contents page:

• Multiple images
• If just one image per pages, contents should be over two pages.
• Contents should reflect cover stories
• Largest image should be the cover star
• Not all contents is on the contents page
• Weekly = 60 pages. Monthly = 140 pages
• Divide contents in sections
• Page Number = page 6 upwards
• Elements to include : Subscription offer. Letter from the editor. Magazine branding (colour and logos).

I am going to use this for inspiration for my contents page, in regards to the design and layout .

Although I do like the design of this one, I just feel like the first option would suit my chosen genre a lot more.

Name Ideas

Name ideas Solo  Vibes Solitary Frenzy Outburst Delirium (chosen name) : I feel like this name is memorable so would fit its role as a mast head and also the definition of delirium is wild excitement or ecstasy and I would like my reader to feel excited when reading my magazine.  Complex Vague  Indíe : Since I am designing an indie magazine it would suit that the name would be indíe and considering indie is short for individual having the accent it makes it individual. However I don't think this has the same look for the magazine as delirium does. Genre Brand Ecstasy Rapture

Mise-en-scene, location and prop ideas

I am planning to do a grey or gradient (black to white) background with my models in front to put emphasis on the models/artists and the headlines and mast head. Therefore for this location I would like to use a studio/greenroom.

Originally I wasn't going to use any major props in my photos because I don't feel like it would be appropriate to do so. However if possible I am going to use an amp to put in the back ground I will use it as I feel like it would give a good effect. Another possible prop I would use would be a bass guitar or drums.

Reader profile research

A reader profile is an view of an the average reader, in this case, of a magazine. An audience reader profile is used by all media institutions to help design their magazine to appeal and best suit their target audience. 

This could help sell a magazine because it will gather the interests and information of the most common buyers that is needed to produce the magazine in the most efficient and effective way to sell it.
For example Q's reader profile is this : 

Usually magazines decide on prices depending on their target audiences social classes. This chart is the codes and meanings of each one.

LIIAR analysis

Ideology: Q magazines ideology is to show established artists rather then new artists 

Institution: The publisher of Q magazine is Bauer Media Group which is a large European based media company in Hamburg. They manage over 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world. Some other magazines they publish are Grazia, Kerrang, Closer, FHM and many more. They also have channels on TV like 4music, Heat, Kiss, Smashhits along with radio channels like Absolute Radio, Magic, Kiss, Viking, Wave. This shows that the company serves a wide audience and that Q is just one part of that.

Audience: The audience of Q varies from different ages and genders. A majority of readers are men with a statistic of 66.2%. Along with this, it shows that 83.8% are between the ages of 15-44. This shows Q is has a wide audience and therefore caters for them all by featuring iconic artists like Liam Gallagher, John Lennon, Lady Gaga and so on.

Representation: Liam Gallagher represents the group Beady Eye in this front cover, however the rest of the band is still shown through Gallagher's glasses. His clothes represent the type of music he produces as they are from the 90's and his genre of music is indie. 

Brief

To design a front cover, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. All images and text used must be original, a minimal of four images must be used.

What have you learnt from completing this task?

In the beginning I didn't know how to use photoshop so throughout this process I learnt and taught myself some key skills of photoshop.

I've used the common convention of using primary colours for the mast head and coverlines to make them bold and easy to read.

What would you change if you were to do this task again?
If i was to do this task again i would take a medium close up shot as the photo I took wasn't therefore did not meet the criteria.

Most likely to chose this as I really like the angle and the way the model is looking.

Possibility but I don't quite like the lighting.

The ideas for my location include:

Walking towards the camera smiling with books/folders/college work in there hands on a sunny day

On the scene i will not be using a lot of props, only a folder and possibly a couple of books.

Colour Scheme

I like the idea of neutral colours like the black, greys and whites then use the yellow for the mast head with a white background and black coverlines. However to make it more colourful and bold I will most probably chose the red, blue and yellow colour scheme.
